In our work as a technical inspection firm, we encounter a lot of steel structures in seemingly good shape. However, experience tells us that looks can be deceiving. A beam that might appear to still be up to spec can hide some nasty deterioration under the surface. Conventional wisdom says looking under the surface without destructively taking a piece to a lab is the only way to get an accurate view on the state of the metal.
